Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic research team and they will get hands-on experience in the generation and analysis of genomic, epidemiological and clinical data.

Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic research team and they will get hands-on experience in the generation and analysis of genomic, epidemiological and clinical data.

Students will work with leading scientists in the field, who commonly publish in some of the top biomedical journals (i.e. Science, Nature, Lancet and NEJM) and who have access to high quality data from large clinic and population-based cohorts as part of collaborative clinical and epidemiological networks.

The specific focus of KRISP within the CoE relates to HIV drug resistance – this includes developing laboratory methods for genotypic HIV drug resistance testing, and analyzing HIV drug resistance data together with clinical and epidemiological data.

Requirements:
Prior qualification in Virology/Molecular Biology/Medical Sciences (or a closely-related field).
Specific experience in generating and analysing genomic data is desirable.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The applicants must be registered for postgraduate studies at UKZN for the duration of the scholarship award.
  • Age limits at the time of scholarship application: Masters - 30 years of age or younger at 31 December 2022, Doctoral - Applicants must be 32 years of age or younger as at 31 December 2022.
  • The Academic achievement of the applicant must be >65% in their honours or Masters degrees respectively to be considered for either the Masters or Doctoral scholarship.
  • The applicant must not be a recipient of an NRF or state funded institution bursary/funding (currently/previously) for the same degree as the scholarship he/she is applying for at KRISP.
